Another exciting evening, with new members joining us. The evening saw two experienced speakers deliver fine speeches and an up and coming speaker give his structure speech. Our manual has been well recieved and we continue to strive forward in our independent state.

The topics session was chair by a newer member who challenged us all well with a job interview style topic session.

A great evening and we all look forward to our next meeting on the 22nd.

January 8th Meeting

Christmas, New Year and snow all pushed aside and we all came back with some great enthusiasm and dedication. The meeting enjoyed an experienced member taking control of the evening and guiding us through an interesting and challenging evening. It was kicked off with an additional warm up for some to exercise their vocal cords and challenge them to read versus from well known poems. The task was to be over zealous and over act the verse which was tackle very well almost by all!! We then had two very good speeches by new members and we look forward to more from them. After a wonderful cup of tea and biscuit, we were all then challenged to a debit style topics session. This worked really well and everyone enjoyed the session. The evening was rounded off down the pub!

December 14th Meeting

The last meeting of the decade and it was my first attempt at chairing! Well there some improvement required there! However a very enjoyable evening with two great icebreakers and a very useful tutorial. A great evening had by all I think which was finished off in the pub for a festive drink!

November 23rd Meeting

Sometimes you are just amazed! We knew that many of our regular members were unable to attend, and I thought we might be a little short on numbers. Not so! We were delighted to welcome at least four people for the first time, as well as a couple of people returning to us. We had a terrific meeting. Confident speaking, ice-breakers, and everything working perfectly in terms of encouraging both new and experienced members to enjoy our art. It all goes to show that sometimes you just never know. We have a strong core membership that can give so much to newcomers, and they in turn encourage the whole club to develop and grow. It really is an uplifting experience to spend an evening at Croydon Speakers club. Already I am looking forward to our next meeting.

Unfortunately I missed the first meeting of October but I hear it was a small affair. What happened? I am not sure but what i do know was that the meeting continued and we hit back last night!

We enjoyed two ice breakers which were a great success and we all look forward to more speeches from our newcomers. We also had an impromptu speech from one of our seasoned members. Always a very difficult task and it was a expertly tackled.

Our topics session challenged us all and was hugely enjoyable and created lots of laughs and was brilliantly delivered by Frank.

All in all a very enjoyable and successful evening.

This meeting treated us to a tutorial session on constructing a speech from a very experienced and professional speaker. A member took up the challenge to demonstrate how to deliver the speech we all contributed to create. We then all enjoyed a humor speech which was cleverly constructed speech in response to one of the speeches from the last meeting!

We also welcomed 3 more new members to the club and they all did a great job in delivering their first topic. The meeting in my mind was a great success and great start to the new speaking year. Roll on October!

Sucessful First Meeting

Our opening meeting on the 14th September was a total success. We welcomed 6 new members starting their journey towards speaking excellence. It was great to see past members again after the summer break and to hear at least a few words from everybody. Although it was the first meeting we had three terrrific speeches from our more experienced speakers. We heard an interesting plea for holidaying at home, the tale of the little voice in our ears, and the adventures of a novice sea captain. Something to look forward to at the next meeting is a response to this last speech! I will not spoil the surprise. An all inclusive topics session set at just the right level for every speaker concluded our evening. Croydon speakers is going from strength to strength and has already set the standards that others can only dream about. Come along as our guest and see for yourself.

New Season starting on 14th September 2009

Welcome to the first piece of news for the new season. The news tailed off at the end of last season. Not because there wasn't any, in fact the reverse was true. One of our members was the National Final runner up in a competion, another a regional finalist in a different competition, a previous club president was awarded both the Masterpiece and Advanced certificates and the news rolled on! In the excitement we forget to write about it all. We will do better this year. We have a new club president and some new blood on the committee. one or two have left, two or three have joined and the club retains its position as being a strong force for better speaking. In fact, in the immediate area there is no better club for enjoying the art of speaking in public. New members are always welcome and all you need to do is turn up at 8.00pm on the meeting dates. We will look forward to meeting you. Whether you want to enjoy social speaking, enhance your business speaking skills or merely find something really interesting to do as a hobby twice a month, you will be made to feel very welcome. This weeks meeting welcomed two visitors to the club and they enjoyed a great ice breaker and a very enlightening tutorial on chairmanship. The evening also included a challenging topics session which was beautifully evaluated by an experienced speaker. So all in all a fantastic evening, everyone took something away from the evening and had fun.

Another terrific evening with both ends of the speaking spectrum covered. We had an opening Icebreaker speech and two advanced speeches. Add into that a topics session, some astute evaluations and the evening was deemed to be a total success. Whether you are a new speaker looking for encouragement, support and mentoring or whether you are a more experienced speaker looking for suitable opportunities to fine tune your speaking skills, Croydon Speakers is the place to be.

Dispite the sad news we all enjoyed our evening with an ice breaker from a first timer and a level 7 speech. Frank challenged us all with his version of topics using PowerPoint.

Well we grow and we grow, don't we! Another very enjoyable evening with fantastic speeches. We tested our experience speakers with a challenging topic and gave them a limited time to prepare their speeches before delivering them. The evening was very well chaired by Sana who took on the challenge for the second meeting running to allow her to re-enforce her skills and make improvements. The topics session was again fun and challenging and stretched everyone as they should. The evening was the completed by some great feedback from the evaluators. So another successful evening, only 2weeks till the next one! Come and join us!

Its the New Year!

The Christmas break is over and we are back! A new year, a fresh start and we had a good set of meetings in January. We successfully tried out a new PowerPoint topics session which was well received. We welcomed back some members from their travels and welcomed new friends to our club. We also cannot forget we had a good range of speeches delivered. All in all a great start to the year!!

Christmas Cheer Meeting 22nd December

It might have been the 22nd December and the last meeting of 2008 but it was well attended and a great deal of fun. Our chairperson was taking that role for the first time and did a terrific job which helped the meeting be a success. With a festive theme, we had one speech, one PowerPoint speech and a recital of sorts. Topics were engaging and used the PowerPoint equipment to allow people to get used to this medium. The evaluation of them was helpful and effective. Santa was in evidence, at least his coat was, and the evening had lots of fun, laughter and still some learning points for everyone. It was a possitive way to end the year and we look forward to our speaking in 2009. First meeting is on January 12th. Make a note in your diary and do not miss this wonderful speakers club.

It is always good to see progress being made. Tonight was no exception. We had someone taking the Chairman role for the first time and doing very well indeed. We had one of our newer speakers delivering a level 3 speech, two expereinced speakers also entertaining us, and then good opportunity for people to practice the difficult art of evaluation. All of that was before the tea break. Croydon really does provide a really positive learning expereince. Our two first-time guests certainly had a treat and both of them felt able to join in the impromptu speaking in the second half. This themed session ensured that everyone got a good opportunity to speak. Positive and helpful evaluations highlighted the learning points and the meeting just about finished on time! Quite how we pack so much into each meeting is amazing. It was a strong vibrant evening which made coming out into the cold and damp well worthwhile. Congratulations to everyone who took part in an evening that demonstrated what a great club Croydon Speakers has become.

Monday 10th November

Another inspiring evening saw a new speaker moving up the levels with ease. It seems just a few meetings ago when we tonight’s speaker first came to us. In a short period of time she has grown immensely and entertained us with a wonderfully crafted and beautifully delivered speech that would easily have been assessable at a number of levels. We were entertained and enthralled by the speech, its delivery and pleased to see such progress being made. Everyone also got the chance to speak as we made use of PowerPoint to give every speaker the chance to explore this tool. Croydon leads the way with PowerPoint and we are innovative in the ways we encourage even the most technically challenged people to just begin to get comfortable with it, despite not needing to get ‘hands on’. As a result we had a good evening of speaking, socialising and self development. We are already looking forward to our next meeting which has three speakers lined up and more. Wow....What a positive meeting! We enjoyed a full house with speeches and topics! Another icebreaker from one of our new speakers and a level 5 from Dylan. We then enjoyed a warm up session on a very topical subject, the credit crunch! After the break we all then had the opportunity to tactical a topic. The session ended with some very valuable feedback on what went well and what could do with improvement. All in all a very sucessfully evening and I look forward to seeing you all in two weeks!

Monday 23rd September

Another positive meeting comfortably chaired by the club president. One member tried a potential wedding speech followed by a demonstration of the power of PowerPoint. Our club leads the way with this medium and we had some topics based on pictures on a PowerPoint slide.
The second half saw a more conventional topics session which was well chaired and interesting. Everybody had a chance to speak, everybody who did was evaluated and the evening was a total success. Well done to all those who attended, and for those who didnt, we hope you will come along next time. Next week on the 29th we have an extra meeting which will be a tutorial. A Successful Season

The final two meetings of the year - were a celebration of a good year. Two of our speakers achieved the Masterpiece awards. James and Gerard. The culmination of the practice and dedication that they put into speaking was recognised. The Masterpiece has to be judged by two evaluators - one of whom is external to the club. We were delighted to welcome David L - the London Area President for James' speech, and AN immediate past National Champion Michael R for Gerard's speech. In addition we had an Interim speech award achieved as well by Martin. We work hard at speeches but have also had a great deal of fun this speaking year. With just the dinner left on the speaking calendar, we will celebrate our achievements, rest until September and then welcome Gerard as the new Croydon Club President, taking over from Margot who has worked hard for the club this year.

Meetings in May 12th and 26th

May 12th saw the Croydon Club's AGM and debate. The AGM was quick and painless as it ought to be. The debate was lively and interesting despite the subject having potentially serious outcomes. Once the speakers had spoken, the votes were cast and by a huge majority Croydon members decided to ask the committee to look at becoming an Independent Speakers Club. In reality for most members little will change. Each club, whether in the ASC or not, decides their own path and Croydon Speakers will continue to be the envy of other clubs. As an independent club we will still be involved in the wider community and work to develop each and every speaker to a level they wish to obtain. We will be talking to other organisations over the coming weeks and creating a speaking calendar that will ensure interest, learning and fun for the new season. Of course between now and then maybe the need to leave the ASC will be resolved.
The Bank Holiday meeting was well attended and as we have done on other holiday dates, we had mini speeches, full speeches, and plenty of audience participation. It was gratifying to welcome a guest from a different Area and to hear his positive evaluation of the evening.
With only a few meetings left we have the PowerPoint Challenge to look forward to, a couple of Level 10 Masterpieces and of course the infamous Croydon end-of-year dinner and awards night. Somewhere in addition we might host a team speaking competition if there are any clubs who wish to compete. A busy end to our season but with no sign of energy levels flagging it is definitely not a good time to miss out on attending! See you in June.

28th April - meeting with wow factor

The 28th April meeting was always going to be special! After our slight blip last time, we got it right. Not just slightly right but wonderfully right. Some new friends popped along for the first time and we feeling enthused by our wonderful atmosphere, everybody spoke. Over 20 people listened to the three prepared speeches including the special speech that the press came to listen to. The media people were very impressed by our club and will return on other occasions. New people as well as established speakers, got to speak, and everyone received some terrific evaluations. All in all, another night passed muster as a total success.
We look forward now to our debate evening, the PowerPoint evening as well as the Sussex Pride competition. We will end our season with a special dinner for club members, their partners and selected invited guests. There is no better club in the District than Croydon Speakers. Visit us and find out why!

April 14th Meeting

We had a change to the meeting format tonight to add some variety. We began with a variation of the topic theme and spoke mainly about issues that we could speak with passion. Enthusiasm and passion are of course essential ingredients for speakers in general and for level two speeches. Everyone spoke well and managed to generate interest and debate. The business session had several items of news about out club dinner, Sussex Pride competition and the AGM/debate. This will be emailed in more detail to those on our mailing list.

After a short break, we had two excellent level one speeches that were interesting, informative and a delight to listen to. Both of them has a measure of personal history combined with tales from the past. Both passed easily. An experenced speaker concluded the speeches with a fine offering about corporations.

So another perfect evening? Well no actually. The meeting also demonstrated how important it is to keep in control of events. The chairmanship was poor, and some tasks and expectations slipped. Whilst it was a good meeting in one respect - it reminded us that every meeting needs to be chaired efficiently and competently. Being the strong club that we are, this is something that is easy to practice, and of course, to get right next time.

In normal situations, we get one shot at the social or business speech/presentation. At Croydon speakers you can try something, and learn from it whether it goes very well, or whether is demonstrates a need for a little more polish.

Our evening was a great evening, but it needed a duster to add that special sparkle. A challenge that will be met next time on the 28th April.

Bank Holiday Success

Determined not to miss a single speaking occasion, Croydon Speakers held their regular meeting this week, despite it being the Bank Holiday. We billed it as a slightly less formal, relaxed meeting where you could try out all sorts of speeches, timings, and roles. What we got was incredible. We had 20 members who between them gave 4 first time speeches, one early level and one humour speech. A total of six speeches of various lengths. Good evaluations and tight timekeeping allowed this to still happen within the first hour, and for someone to try their hand at chairing a meeting for the first time! Second half topics rounded the evening off nicely. We achieved all of this within time because the vibrant enthusiastic membership work together to enjoy speaking and to make the most of every opportunity. It was a fun evening that worked perfectly. If you are wanting to experience the club judged the best in district for the second year, come along. Finally, a special mention to our new member who demonstrated his abilities to overcome a stammer. The support in the club was apparent with the loud applause as he achieved his goal.

Art of Rhetoric - meeting 10th March

Sometimes a meeting stands out as one of the best of the season. Tonight was that meeting. Leon Labovitch, a highly respected and talented public speaker treated us to a workshop on the Art of Rhetoric. We learnt so much, we understood so much and then we were given the opportunity to practice that learning and understanding. It was a superb evening that speakers at all levels enjoyed and will be able to make use of in their own speech preparation and delivery. Leon allowed us to film it and the DVD will be available to Croydon members in due course. All the conversation after the meeting was full of praise and totally positive. Leon left us feeling inspired, motivated and encouraged. A terrific evening and thoroughly worthwhile

25th February Meeting

All of a sudden it is spring! There was a wonderful energy in this meeting. We had a new speaker, someone who in the middle levels, a top master speaker and an innovative PowerPoint speech. A full agenda of speeches at various levels. The PowerPoint speech was an excellent example of how it should be used to enhance the speech and not become the speech. Through the evaluations each speaker received feedback and everyone learnt something.
There was more! We had new guests for the evening who by the end felt they wanted to join our club and begin to enhance their speaking skills. Some new people and others from other places - this continues to strengthen our club and they are all welcome.

February 11th Meeting

With the competitions now out of the way we came back to a traditional meeting with a some excellent speeches from new and experienced speakers. We enjoyed a gestures speech on sport which caused a little stir in the evalutions! A strong Crab Dance performance from one of our more vibrant speakers and a masterpiece! So strong speaking all round. We also had a delight of a topics session where we were all given a ticket to an event which stretched us all and allowed many to develop the topic into a great speech!

Our chair for the evening did a fanastic job and welcomed four new people to the meeting. I believe this was her only second time chairing a meeting a she gave us all a wonderful, fun, relaxed and enjoyable evening so big credit to her.

South Area Competitions

The South Area competitions were held today and hosted by our club. 7 magnificent speeches, 5 evaluations, and 4 topics. The best that the area can offer. It was a super showcase for speakers at all levels, to enjoy, to learn and just to participate. The chief judge was from outside the area, ably assisted by various people as required. Everything was transparent and fair. The AGM aspect of the afternoon was heated but we learn from that as well. However, staying with the competitions, it was a success - nothing stood in the way and we wish all the competitors from the South Area every success when they go to the District Finals on the 9th March.

Into the New year!

The 14th January meeting was welcomed by a strong attendance including four first time guests. We welcomed each of them and enjoyed their contributions. It seemed like a long time since we had last met, and it was good to catch up with people. It was competition night, and it was a close fought battle for this year's trophies. Our club prides itself on transparent judging and half of the audience made up the judging panel - thus ensuring a fair decision. Competitions are fine, but our strength is the fun, the enthusiasm and the enjoyment of good speeches, and of watching people develop. Who wins or loses is not the most important aspect of the club. Most meetings are not in the slightest way competitive. Each individual is developing their learning speaking skills set with the help of others at all levels. It is fun to compete from time to time, but it is even more satisfying to know that you don't need to compete to win! It was a good meeting and set 2008 off to a positive and satisfying start.

December 10th meeting.

Our last meeting before Xmas - and what a terrific meeting it was. Four solid speeches. Three from our newer members - all them proving how well they are doing. We heard about stress, about running a marathon (and the stress involved!) and the wonders of scuba diving. In addition we had an experienced speaker giving us a viewpoint on the rites of passage at Christmas. The impromptu speaking featured topics of a seasonal nature and gave everyone an opportunity to speak. Excellent chairing from our president meant that our last meeting left us feeling really good, and excitedly looking forward to the January meetings. Our unique combination of experience, youth and vitality, innovation and friendly support makes us a super club to join. Monday 24th November

Another meeting, and another success! Tonight's meeting was chaired by Simon whose safe hands guided us through the meeting very well and introduced our three speakers, who spoke at different levels ensuring interest, and entertainment. The topics session was chaired by Gerard who took us into a journey to have a little look at the brighter side of life, Monty Python style! The topics allowed everyone to have a chance to speak, and to be appropriately challenged in the supportive atmosphere. Croydon has developed into a very special place for speakers. Yet again it was a very enjoyable and entertaining evening. Some of us happened to finish the evening by going to one of the local pubs. It was a delight to meet by chance Ken - a previous president and long term supported of Croydon Speakers. Ken has commitments on a Monday that prevent him from attending, but it is always a pleasure to listen to him. One more meeting before the xmas break - and elsewhere on the website, there is news of a special evening in March. It all happens at Croydon. Make sure you put the dates in your diary. Monday 12th November

It is so satisfying to attend a meeting with a strong membership. Two score attendance - two new people - and a terrific evening. Well done to the speakers - Dylan gave a strong speech advocating the abolishment almost of the car, whilst Jeannie and Stanley gave very different speeches about air travel. Oliver rounded off the speeches with his work at home and avoid the tube plea. It is worth noting that one of the more difficult speeches is recognised as Level 8 - humour. Stanley's speech was uncharacteristically light-hearted and more than met the requirements for that level. A good pass albeit that level 6 and 7 have yet to be mastered.
Topics took us into our memories of the last time.... in my case jogging! An interesting and inspiring session ably led by Anna who was doing the role for the first time. There are always opportunities to stretch and challenge yourself.... take them! You know the saying about ships being safe in habour... but that is not what a ship is for...... It is fun and entertaining to listen to speeches... but so much more satisfying to deliver a speech, undertake a role and become an active member. Croydon Speakers continues to provide a fantastic experience for speakers at any level. All you need to do.... is come along on the 2nd or 4th Monday of the month.

Team Speaking Competition

Sunday 4th November saw the District team speaking competition. 5 teams from around the District competed in what was to prove a very close competition. Let me say now that we did not win... and let me say now that not winning is not important. The reason for that is that our team members all gave speeches that were 'personal bests'. The top teams were so close that only a point or two separated them. But I know that our team members felt a real buzz when they had finished speaking. It was great that the other teams excelled as well. The standard was higher than previous years by some measure. We welcomed some familiar faces, and plenty of new speakers. Such was the atmosphere, that new speakers were not intimidated but instead lifted their game. There were opportunities for all levels of speaker, interesting and often amusing speeches and the afternoon was a total success. Congratulations to the winning team from West Kent, and to the winner of the individual cup. Most of all though, congratulations to all our club members who literally shone. We remain the strongest club overall in the district, we encourage new members at all levels and we have a great deal of fun. Come along and find out - 2nd and 4th Mondays.

October 22nd Meeting - Another sucess!

Another successful meeting last night. It entailed congratulating three speakers taking their first step on the ladder in delivering the ice breaker which can only be a good omen for the future. We also enjoyed listening to an experienced speaker which was a real delight! The speeches were followed by an interesting and challenging topics session, loosely themed on the disappointment on the English performance in the last week! Again we had a strong turn out with some apologies so the next meeting looks as strong as ever! I look forward to seeing you all there on the 12th Nov.

October 8th Meeting. We meant what we said!

I am delighted to report that the meeting held on the 8th continued to set new standards. It had a focus on speaking with passion, enthusiasm and conviction and that was admirably demonstrated in the specially prepared speeches, as well as the impromptu speaking. In addition we had someone deliver their first speech (icebreaker level 1) and what a fine speech it was. Add into the mix a quick tutorial, first class evaluations and a great deal of fun and you can understand why the evening was special. Over 20 people attended, and yet we managed to give everyone a speaking opportunity. It is always a pleasure to welcome new people and we had two new potential members this evening. Of course it is even better to welcome back people for the second and subsequent time. Croydon continues to gain in strength and develop some amazing speakers. We have a full agenda for the next meeting and people are booking ahead to ensure the ongoing success of our club. Report on the meeting of the 24th Sept

Sometimes there is something special in the air. This was the case at this meeting. We had half a dozen new people, many established speakers and a terrific evening! Croydon club has developed and led the way with the use of PowerPoint. We had a tutorial covering the new PowerPoint levels. We had a speech that was also a tutorial on the art of putting together a speech, and finally we had a good example of a pure speech. That was only the first half!
After a full business session, the topics gave everyone the chance to speak and every single new member took the opportunity and not only spoke, but did so with confidence, humour and interest. Well done to each and every one of them. The evening was expertly chaired, the evaluations were specific and helpful and the evening a total success. Well done to everyone for making the evening special.

The first meeting of the new season

This was a great start to the new season, it was a well attended meeting despite a number of the regulars being missing. The meeting was chaired by Frank and we had 4 excellent speeches, with Sana giving her Ice Breaker, Stan doing a Level 5, Use of Voice, Ray a Level 8, Humour, and Garard a level 9, Rapport. We welcomed two new people Lucy and Dylan and we all look forward to seeing them at the next meeting.

The summer holidays are drawing to a close, and the time is nearly upon us when we all will gather at the church hall to catch up with all our holiday news and listen to a speech or two!
